By 2016 the country’s 6 main ports handled 1.5 billion TEUs, beating regional trends with an 8.3% growth rate. The Dominican Republic (DR) is the second-largest Caribbean nation by area (after Cuba) at 48,511 Km2 and by population with approximately 10.5 million people. The capital and the largest city is Santo Domingo, which is also the largest city in the Caribbean. Santo Domingo has a population of 970,000 with a metropolitan population of nearly 3 million.
The DR has the eighth largest economy in Latin America and is the largest economy in the Caribbean and Central American region. Though long known for its agriculture and mining, Dominican economy relies nowadays mostly on services. The DR has enjoyed one of the strongest growth rates in Latin America and the Caribbean over the past 25 years.
